Russia fired a hypersonic Oreshnik missile at a target in western Ukraine overnight Thursday, near the border with NATO member Poland, in what has been labeled a brazen “warning” to the wider continent and the United States.

Ukrainian authorities reported multiple deaths and infrastructure damage after Russia said it deployed a new missile system in an overnight strike.

Russia says the military has used the new Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile in a strike on Ukraine.

Moscow said the overnight strike was in response to an alleged Ukrainian drone strike on a residence used by President Vladimir Putin, which the U.S. and others said did not happen.

Russia bombarded Ukraine with hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles in a large-scale overnight attack, officials said Friday, killing at least four people. For only the second time, it used a new ballistic missile that it says flies at 10 times the speed of sound and is unstoppable.

The hypersonic Oreshnik intermediate range ballistic missile hit Ukraine's western Lviv region late Thursday night, although officials there did not mention any casualties.

It is only the second time Moscow has deployed the hypersonic ballistic missile, which was first used to hit Dnipro in November.
